Rafael's First Christmas

My favorite thing about our Christmas celebration this year was that, everyone was in perfect harmony with each other. The peace between us was so palpable, and our joy so real. What a blessing!

Ramon cooked most of our delicious feast: two roasted chickens, the annual traditional carrot souffle, mushroom gravy, and two apple pies. I made a beet root, orange, and roasted walnut salad, and my sister in law brought dumplings. I was so proud of Ramon, who only learned how to cook in the past four months, and is astonishingly good at it.

Rafael slept through the all the festivities, which I thought was pretty funny. It was as if he knew it would have all been too much for him. As everyone was putting on their shoes and coats to leave, I heard him rustling in the bedroom and there he was, ready to say a quick hello and goodbye to our guests. It was actually so perfect this way, because I was able to enjoy our meal and gift giving, and we were both stress-free.

The most important thing was that he got to see his great grandmother, and that I got a few photographs of them together. I am glad that he will see them someday, when she is gone, and he doesn't remember.

Once the last person shut the door behind them, our home was still and warm and we let out sighs and relaxed. I put Raffi into some reindeer pajamas and we opened his gifts with him. Holding my chubby little angel, sitting by the twinkling Christmas tree, whispering to him about Santa, unwrapping a little wooden carousel and a vintage race car....it was all such a dream come true.

It was a very special Christmas, indeed. Probably the most special of all.

Wreath Making at the Farmhouse

My friend Daniela, whose baby girl was born four days after Rafael, invited me over to her farmhouse for a get together to make advent wreaths. She lives with her husband and daughter in an old farmhouse at the end of a dirt road outside of town. It's so rural that no snow plows go out there, and her husband has to clear the way with a tractor when it snows.

Us women gathered around a huge old table, our babies and children piled on the couch and crawling on the floor, while the men headed out to cut evergreen branches, rose hips, and berries.

Beginning with the first Sunday of Advent, you light one candle. An additional candle is lit during each subsequent week until, by the last Sunday before Christmas, all four candles are lit.

That familiar spicy fragrance of cut evergreens filled the room when the men carried in arm loads of branches; the smell of the Christmas season.

We chatted, wound branches with wire around straw rings, breastfed our babies, played with toddlers, ate cookies, drank tea, and decorated our wreaths with nuts, berries, pine cones and candles.

Certainly, one of the most wonderful parts of holidays are the preparations!

Rafael napped and then played with some other babies (meaning he lay next to them and sucked on his hand). He was so peaceful and content. I can't help but feel very proud of him every time I look at his sweet face.

I chose to use the classic colors of the holiday: red, white, and green, with some browns mixed in for a touch of rustic country charm.

I love how it turned out and hope Daniela will hold this gathering again next year. There's just something about a group of women, sharing conversation and using their hands to make things together, that feels very right to me.

Every Day Love

I wish you could have tasted this cake. Simple chocolate with cream cheese frosting, topped with perfectly ripe strawberries. So perfect. Turning 30 was a joy!

This winter is dragging on, but good things are happening, despite the fact that I haven't been here much to write about it.

Even though the forest was white with snow this morning, the birds were singing like it was Spring. I couldn't believe how loud they were! I thought, They really do carry faith within them, to sing like that on a day like this. I am hungry for green, so impatient for growth and new beginnings! But then my heart tells me to use these last cold weeks for creativity, tea, and cookies.

On this day, Valentine's Day, I want to wish you all Every Day Love. Love every day. Not just on a holiday. Every day. That's my wish for you!

shower the people you love with love...

"I hope we always celebrate Valentine's Day. The making of valentines was a serious business when I was growing up. Gilt and silver paper, red hearts, lacy paper frill, blue ribbons, and little doves to paste on the finished product-we loved them all. I usually got my doves on upside down, but I thought they were elegant.
Later on, when we were older, there was Valentine's Day when the only boy in the world produced a package from his pocket with a present in it. Oh, enchanted winter moon shining down on two bent heads, on mittened hands! The paper crackled, the ribbon was folded away, and there it was, the little locket set with chips of what might be diamonds, or the silver ring with the matrix stone. Who ever forgets first love, and the first real valentine?
After Valentine's Day we can really feel that winter is on the downgrade. A few more blizzards, perhaps, but definitely March will arrive. There will be a certain day when the air comes in over the hills with a different feeling. It's an untangible thing, known only to folks who have had hard winters, and it is exciting and wonderful."
-Gladys Taber, The Book of Stillmeadow

The village is snuggled into thick drifts of snow. The farmer's acreage is like a sea of white foam, dotted with tiny mole-hill islands, powder blowing off the hilltop with a sifting sound. Kiki chases stray leaves that come tumbling down the slope, or rolls on grainy patches of ice, licking and gnawing, delighting in the cold. I stand, knee-deep in the snow, laughing, my hood over my head, hands gloved and thrust into my pockets, wind and the occasional caw of a crow the only sounds. We enjoy being the only ones out there in the snowy hills and fields...there is a feeling of luxury in that solitude. It's as if we have this tremendous white stretching playground just for us. Yesterday Ramon and I felt like little kids for an instant...he suddenly shouted and dove into a deep drift. I giggled and fell on my back, waving and arms and legs to make a snow angel. Kiki watched us, panting, and then went on leaping through the snow, nose to the ground, searching for who-knows-what. It was truly jofyul.

Is it true what Gladys says? Is spring really so near? Hard to believe. And yet I have witnessed it myself; how the world suddenly shivers and shakes and thaws, and everything is dripping and green and brown; first sopping wet and glistening in the weak sun...and then one day, there is new life bursting from buds, and the full creek is gushing and laughing, and birds fill the air with energetic singing. And then you spot it...the first brave yellow primrose, swelling between the rotten leaves of autumn past, and you smell that strong sweet scent of wild daphne, and follow the fragrance to where it blossoms, purple and delicate, on unassuming stalks. The raspberry canes are dotted with green, and the grass and clover are slowly lifting their matted blades and leaves after having been smothered in snow and ice for months on end. And quite suddenly it is here...the first inkling that spring is arriving.

So I remember this, on days where the only green or flowers are in a vase or on my windowsil. And I do my best to enjoy these snow days, to laugh at Kiki's childish enthusiasm as she rolls and digs, to savor hours indoors, kettle whistling and heater on high. Yes, in February we live in the limbo of trying to enjoy the moment while holding onto the hope that spring will come soon.

I am wishing you all a lovely, heart-warming Valentine's Day....we aren't celebrating in the classic sense of the holiday, but are endulging in the quiet moments that a couple who has been together for a very long time knows to savor...those hours side by side, reading, or typing, or dreaming, where you don't have to talk, but you are fully aware and taking comfort in the warmth of their body heat, the sound of them breathing, and the simple fact that they are there next to you.

The simple fact that their hot feet are there for you to press yours against when they are cold....true love.

For Real Chocolate Lovers: Black Tie Cookies

If you love chocolate, these are cookies for you.
A soft, chewey, brownie-like cookie with chunks of dark and white chocolate.
These are quite elegant, and their deep brown with black and white spots looks lovely with pink.
In other words, perfect for packing up in tissue paper and tying with pink ribbon for a valentine's day gift.
I like to use chocolate chunks instead of chips, and I substituted 1/4 of the butter with solid organic coconut oil, which gave them a slight coconutty aroma.
If you don't like white chocolate, consider replacing it with toasted, chopped hazelnuts.
These are so delicious.
I make them when I need 'chocolate comfort.'
Caution: be sure to freeze some and give some away if you are in danger of cookie snarffing.

BLACK TIE COOKIES
makes about 4 dozen
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup dark brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 cup softened butter
3 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
6 oz semi sweet chocolate chips
6 oz white chocolate chips

preheat oven to 325°

Combine first 4 ingredients.
Using an electric mixer, cream together butter and both sugars until fluffy, then add the eggs and vanilla and beat til smooth.
Mix wet and dry until JUST combined.
Fold in the chocolate chips/chunks until JUST combined.
Drop by the tablespoon onto ungreased cookie sheets, about 2 inches apart.
Bake 12, and allow to cool on pan before transferring to a cool, flat surface (they will appear soft and gooey when you take them out of the oven but will keep cooking while they rest on the baking sheet.)
Store in an airtight container at room temperature or freeze....or give to deserving chocoholics.

Hope these find their way into your cookie jar.

It's a cold snowy Friday...I'm off to the farmer's market for organic goods and banter with the old farmer who always tells me what a smart and pretty girl I am and slips a free apple into my bag.
It's the small simple things.

tiny treasures abound...plus, easter inspiration!

When my twitter friend Sandra, or 'sweetpeas4me' as she's called there, heard about the project we have going on here, she told me she had some treasures she had collected over time and that she would love to share them. She quickly put all these little items together and sent me the pictures. Here they are, for us to admire:

"Found these along coast of Maine in September of 2008. I love Maine."

"Found these feathers in my yard over the past three years. Hawk, Blue Jay, Cardinal, Junco or Chickdee. Don't know what the white one is."

Thank you, Sandra, for sharing these tiny treasures with us. They are very beautiful. I especially like the beach glass and the cardinal feather. We are looking forward to seeing more of the beautiful things you find.

We finally took down the Christmas ornaments this morning. When the bobbles and birdies were nestled safely in their cartons they looked so beautiful that I had to take pictures. I've seen some people decorate white or silver artificial trees or bare branches in a vase for Easter and was wondering if I should do the same with some of these. They are almost too pretty to use only once a year.

I can imagine some of them would look pretty mixed with blown white egg shells hung with pastel ribbons. Here is my inspiration:

GORGEOUS.

Hope you are all enjoying your weekend. It's a sunny, freezing cold Saturday here...my husband and my dog are both napping and the only sounds are of the clock ticking, hot water trickling through the heaters, and my two loved ones breathing. Glorious.

Looking forward to hearing from you....what do you think of the Easter trees? Have you gone on a walk today? Did you fill your pockets with nature's humble treasures?

Tell me everything!

a tiny magical island

we spent the last day of 2009 on this tiny island in the bavarian lake chiemsee.
it was magical.

tranquil and mysterious.
distant mountains swathed in mist.
no cars, just boats.
a benedictine nunnery built in 782 where nuns live and practice today, and make their famous kloster liquor.
a gravestone with the beautiful name apollonia...who was she? what was her life like on the island? i only know she lived in the 1800s.
sea birds dipping in the air and gliding over calm waters. ducks picking around frosty gardens. there were foxgloves and dahlias here in summer. I can see their frozen stalks against weathered picket fences.
we warmed ourselves with rich food and looked at hand-painted pottery in a local shop.
and when we left, the ferry pulling away from the dock, i hoped i would come back again. to this tiny, quiet piece of magic.

New England B and Bs in Winter Dress!

Snow, icicles, balsam wreaths and red bows; quaint towns dressed in their finest holiday garb; white buildings with firelight glowing through their shutter-sided windows....Christmas time in New England! Here, for your viewing and day-dreaming pleasure:

I could dream for hours about having a cozy winter weekend tucked into one of these. Maybe one day the dream will come true!

These fashion dreams are admittedly easier to accomplish than an expensive trip to New England; handmade shoes, gloves, and frills from etsy.com to make you, a friend, or a little one look your best this winter:

Dream Home nr 14 and Vintage Ornaments

Perfect time of year to show this beautiful domicile, complete with a Christmas wreath! I have always loved this look, a mix of stone and wood. I would pay money to see what it looks like inside. I image a wide-open kitchen and living room, complete with a huge stone fireplace and mantle decorated beautifully for the season. Is the white wooden part a guest house? I'd like to think it is. A whole family could come and visit for the holidays, gathering around the huge brightly-lit christmas tree, then go ice-skating on the frozen lake out back. Yes, let's pretend there's a frozen lake out back! And in spring, I am sure there are colorful tulips growing along that picket fence.

Onto Christmas matters: I've compiled a selection of very pretty vintage ornaments which I found on etsy.com. It must be wonderful to have decorations in your home which have been delighting families for years. I am eager to begin a collection of vintage ornaments for my family to enjoy.

In closing, I wanted to show you this adorable doggy sweater from etsy's BeanTownHandmade. I've been back and forth about it for days now. One part of me thinks, "Don't become one of those people who puts their dog in a sweater!" The other part of me thinks, "But Kiki would look so unbelievably sweet in that sweater!"

So, what's the verdict....do you think dogs in sweaters are ridiculous or endearing?

Morwenna and her fiancè are making the journey all the way from Hampshire, UK, to visit us tomorrow here in Austria. I am so excited! We'll have to take a few photos for you all to see.

Hope you are in enjoying your Saturday, thanks as always for stopping by!
