addictive apple berry crumble

This crumble is one of the many reasons my husband loves me :)
I served it for his birthday (instead of cake) with a scoop of organic vanilla ice cream and a cream puff on the side. Ramon actually ended up eating three helpings, and kept Mmmmhing and Yuuummming along with everyone else. And when we came back home from an extravagant and delicious meal at the lovely brick-walled Danielis in Vienna, he actually managed to make room in his stuffed belly for the tasty leftovers. He said, "I think this crumble is actually addictive," and shoveled some more into his mouth despite being very, very full.
So here is the recipe, adapted from my favorite Susan Branch book, 'Autumn.' Very simple, very very delicious. Enjoy!

Addictive Apple Berry Crumble
(I doubled this recipe for Ramon's birthday celebration)
preheat oven to 375°
4 large apples or 6 small apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thinly
1 cup fresh or frozen berries (I used a frozen, thawed mix)
1 tablespoon sugar
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup oats
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/3 cup softened butter
Butter a square baking pan. Toss the apple slices and berries with the tablespoon of sugar and then place in the baking pan. Mix remaining ingredients well and then sprinkle them over the fruit. Bake for 30 minutes and then serve hot with ice cream or cold with whipped cream. (If doubling the recipe, cover the uncooked crumble with foil and bake for 20 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes. Crumble is done when it's golden and bubbling.)
